Why Resurge Africa?

  Cancer diagnosis..

When I had my first my first Melanoma diagnosis in my foot in 2017 and it was a very worrying time, especially the uncertainty.

I have always been a glass half full person and it was a positive attitude that really helped give me the inner strength to deal with this new situation.

I coped by focusing positively on my career again, which is when I started to take on more commissioned work, and decided to setup my website.

  I've been back into my working routine for a while, but these past few years have certainly been an intense period of change and growth and have definitely discovered my inner strength. I don't know how, but I have got through some pretty challenging experiences health wise and I definitely feel blessed and I have come out the other side stronger... 

I am just grateful to be well and this is more importantly, down to the dedicated medical teams, which is why its important to share knowledge and expertise around the world, such as in the vital work of ReSurge Africa.

Creating unique artwork, whilst giving to others.

I had always had the idea of connecting with a charity, to help the less fortunate by giving back through my artwork. It was whilst recovering from Melanoma surgery, that I became aware of the vital work of ReSurge Africa.

I contacted Mr Odhran Shelley, the  Chairman of ReSurge Africa.

Mr Shelley works predominantly at the National Burns Centre, St. James' Hospital, Dublin, where he is Director and also a consultant plastic surgeon at the St.Andrews Centre, Broomfield Hospital, Chelmsford

 He very kindly helped me get in touch with people who could help publicise my fundraising efforts. I still get a few updates on their work, but visit their website resurgeafrica.org. or Facebook   

We have such good standards of medical care in the UK and I could only imagine what my experiences would have been like if I was living in a poorer areas of the world, such as Sierra Leone and chose to help by giving back through my artwork. 

Who are ReSurge Africa?

"At ReSurge Africa, we train and empower medical staff working in some of the poorest countries to perform reconstructive surgery and creating a brighter future for the huge number of children and adults affected by debilitating and disfiguring injuries and birth defects.

Many charities provide valuable medical Missions to Africa, but their impact is measured in weeks and months. At ReSurge Africa, we want to deliver lasting change; to establish a self-sustaining reconstructive surgery and burns services in West Africa. Through the training and empowering of surgeons, nurses, Physiotherapists, Anaesthetists and other clinical staff and the creation of much needed infrastructure and facilities, eventually these units will operate independently without the need for overseas aid of any kind".    

For example, in very underdeveloped countries, such as Sierra Leone, survival rates for any type of surgery are very low and patients do not have access to the same standard of facilities, but thanks to this charity things are vastly improving and vital we share our knowledge around the world.
